Florida PROMiSE
(Partnership to Rejuvenate and Optimize Mathematics and Science Education)
and Heartland Educational Consortium
are offering two-week Summer Institutes in Math and Science.
These workshops are designed to increase the content knowledge of K - 12 classroom teachers and to address key concepts in mathematics and science to support the implementation
of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. These will NOT be workshops that contain activities for students in the classroom.
Studies have shown that an increase in conceptual knowledge by teachers leads to increased understanding and achievement by students. Teachers with robust conceptual
understanding of disciplinary content were found more likely to engage students in activities that strengthened their depth of knowledge. Calls to enhance the content preparation of teachers have come from various organizations including
the American Institute of Physics, Association for the Education of Teachers of Science, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Mathematics Association of America, National Science Teacher Association, and the Conference Board of Mathematics
Sciences. Specifically, these reports assert that teachers must engage in teacher education and professional development that results in deeper and fundamental understanding of the content they will be required to teach. The Interstate
New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) has emphasized that teacher education should develop teachers’ disciplinary content knowledge in ways that help them “understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures
of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.”
